About IMCES

Institute of Monitoring of Climatic and Ecological Systems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMCES SB RAS) was established in 1972 originally as Special Design Bureau for Scientific Instrument-Making “Optika”. The Institute is a structural part of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Siberian branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. A scientific-methodological guidance of the Institute is performed by the Branch of Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining Sciences of Russian Academy of Sciences. A joint academic board for Physics of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences and a joint academic board for Biology of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences coordinate scientific work of the Institute.

The main directions of scientific activities of the Institute are:

  • Scientific and technological basis for monitoring and modeling of climatic and ecosystem changes under impact of natural and anthropogenic factors;
  • Scientific basis for developing new instruments, elements and materials for environmental monitoring.

The main directions of applied research are:

  • development of the instruments based on optical, radio-wave and acoustic effects for monitoring of natural and anthropogenic systems;
  • development of environmental-ecological methods and technologies for regional forest management and forest restoration;
  • development of unique graft species of Siberian stone pine for development of industrial caryocarpous plantations and elite plantings.

The main aim of the Institute is implementation and coordination of fundamental and applied scientific research and experimental developments in the field of monitoring, modeling and forecasting of environmental conditions   and climate changes, including geoinformation and instrumental support.

The Institute has a substantial scientific potential: 2 corresponding members of RAS, 12 doctors of sciences and 57 candidates of sciences (Physics and Mathematics, Biology, Engineering and Geography). The total number of employees – 270 and about half of them are younger than 45 years.

Apart from the scientific departments of the Institute, it also includes:

  • Siberian Center for Environmental Research and Training to organize permanent international cooperation;
  • various educational and research centers and branches of the departments of the regional universities.

For successful research the Institute has a climate-ecological observatory, field stations, continuing development of scientific instruments and modern scientific analytical centre.

Field station “Vasyuganye” conducts climatic-ecological monitoring of environment in natural conditions of wide swamp system.

Field station “Kireyevsk” conducts ecological and environmental observations. The scientists of the Institute develops the fundamentally new technologies for environmental monitoring and developing the system for monitoring of earthquakes and landsliding zones.

The personnel of the field station “Kedr” has created a unique archive of clones of Siberian stone pines. This is a base for works in the field of forest restoration, cultivation, morphology, physiology, genetics and selection of forest arboreal plants of Siberia.
